June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. The CDC recommends that everyone between 13 and 64 be tested for HIV at least once as a routine part of healthcare, with more frequent testing for people at higher risk.
Why does this matter? Because according to HIV.gov approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, and about 1 in 8 don’t know it.. Early diagnosis dramatically improves outcomes and is one of the most important tools we have to prevent transmission.
HIV testing is straightforward, confidential, and a normal part of comprehensive lab work. If you’re not sure when you were last tested, this week is a great reminder to ask your provider.
