Fasting for a Blood Test? Here’s what is OK and Not OK

fasting for a blood test

Some lab tests, such as lipid panels and certain glucose tests, may require fasting to provide an accurate baseline. Here’s a quick refresher:

Generally OK during your fasting window:

  • Water (please drink plenty)
  • Prescription medications, unless your provider tells you otherwise

Generally NOT OK:

  • Food of any kind
  • Juice, soda, milk, or flavored drinks
  • Coffee or other beverages unless specifically permitted in your test instructions
  • Chewing gum, mints, or cough drops

Fasting requirements vary by test, but the fasting period is often 8–12 hours. Always follow the instructions provided with your lab order, and contact our team if anything is unclear.
