Specimen:

Collect

  • Umbilical Cord in Sterile Specimen Container

Submit

  • Umbilical Cord in Sterile Specimen Container. Submit Refrigerated.

Special Handling

  • Collect at least 8 inches of umbilical cord.
    Specimen Preparation: Drain and discard any blood. Rinse the exterior of the cord segment with normal saline or an equivalent. Pat the specimen dry and place in container for transport.

Rejection Criteria

  • Cords soaking in fluid.
    Formalin Fixed.
    Tissue that is decomposed.
