Specimen:

Collect

  • One SST

Also Acceptable:
  • One Green Top (Li Heparin)
  • One Lavender (EDTA)
  • One Pink Top (EDTA)
  • One Red Top

Submit

  • 1 mL (Min:0.5 mL) Serum . Submit Frozen. Submit in a Standard Transport Tube.

Also Acceptable:
  • 1 mL (Min:0.5 mL) Plasma . Submit Frozen. Submit in a Standard Transport Tube.

Special Handling

  • In patients recieving therapy with high biotin doses (greater than 5 mg/day), no sample should be taken until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.
    Allow serum separator tube to sit for 15-20 minutes at room temperature for proper clot formation. Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.
    A fasting specimen is preferred.
    A morning specimen is preferred.
