Specimen:

Collect

  • One Lavender (EDTA)

Also Acceptable:
  • One Pink Top (EDTA)

Submit

  • 3 mL (Min:1 mL) Whole blood in Transfer Tube Serotonin. Submit Frozen.

Special Handling

  • Critical Frozen
  • Separate aliquot required for each frozen test ordered
  • Immediately place sample on ice then transfer 3 mL (Min 1 mL) whole blood to Serotonin transfer tube containing ascorbic acid and mix well. Sample must be preserved and frozen within 2 hours.
    Patient prep: Abstain from medications for 72 hours prior to collection with provider approval.
    Medications that may affectesults: lithium, MAO inhibitors,methyldopa, morphine and reserpine.
