Specimen:

Collect

  • Two Lavender (EDTA)

Also Acceptable:
  • Two Pink Top (EDTA)

Submit

  • 1.5 mL (Min:1 mL) Whole blood in Lavender (EDTA). Submit Frozen.
  • 1.5 mL (Min:1 mL) Whole blood in Lavender (EDTA). Submit Refrigerated.

Also Acceptable:
  • 1.5 mL (Min:1 mL) Whole blood in Pink Top (EDTA). Submit Frozen.
  • 1.5 mL (Min:1 mL) Whole blood in Pink Top (EDTA). Submit Refrigerated.

Special Handling

  • Avoid Repeated Freeze/Thaw Cycles
  • Critical Frozen
  • Protect from light during collection, storage and shipment. Transfer whole blood contents of one tube to an amber transport tube and freeze.
    Second tube submit refrigerated for Hematocrit. If the patient has not received a transfusion or experienced excessive bleeding between the RBC folate draw and the hematocrit draw, any hematocrit drawn within 24 hours of the RBC folate draw is acceptable.
