Parathyroid Hormone, Intact (PTH)

Specimen:

Collect

  • One Lavender (EDTA)
  • One SST

Also Acceptable:
  • One Pink Top (EDTA)
  • One Red Top

Submit

  • 1 mL (Min:0.5 mL) Serum . Submit Refrigerated. Submit in a Standard Transport Tube.
  • 1 mL (Min:0.5 mL) Plasma . Submit Refrigerated. Submit in a Standard Transport Tube.

Also Acceptable:
  • 2 mL (Min:1 mL) Serum . Submit Refrigerated. Submit in a Standard Transport Tube.

Special Handling

  • Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature
  • Fasting Specimen is Preferred
  • Serum/Plasma must be separated from cells ASAP!

    EDTA plasma for PTH and SST serum for calcium. Unable to use EDTA plasma for calcium component.
    Serum may be used for PTH but preference should be given to EDTA plasma.

    Due to special handling, PTH cannot be added to previously drawn specimens.

    For patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (>5 mg/day), no laboratory test specimen should be collected until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.

    If serum used for PTH-stability: Ambient 8hrs, RF 2 days, FZ 6 months.

Biotin in specimens taken from patients on high-dose biotin therapy or supplements may intefere with at least one test in this panel and cause inaccurate test results. It is recommended that for patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (> 5 mg/day), no laboratory test specimen should be taken until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.
