Special Handling

  • State Source.
    Sources: Throat.
    Culture for the rule out of Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A strep), Group C and G streptococci, and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. NOTE: Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Corynebacterium diphtheriae may also cause pharyngitis. NAAT testing is the preferred method for the detection of N. gonorrhoeae in patients over the age of 14. Rule out via culture if preferred, 4022/N. gonorrhea culture is the most appropriate test. C. diphtheriae may be isolated in routine culture, but referral to a reference laboratory is recommended.
