Dexamethasone Suppression Test

Specimen:

Collect

  • One SST (POST1)
  • One SST (PRE)

Submit

  • Two 1 mL (Min:0.5 mL) Serum . Submit Refrigerated. Submit in a Standard Transport Tube.

Special Handling

  • Avoid Repeated Freeze/Thaw Cycles
  • Minimize air exposure
  • Draw pre-cortisol on day one. Have patient take oral dose of dexamethasone (prescription given by physician) at midnight, draw sample at 8:00 a.m. on day two.
    Clearly mark specimen one "pre-cortisol", and specimen two "post-cortisol"
    For patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (>5 mg/day), no laboratory test specimen should be collected until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.

Pre-Cortisol reference range varies depending on time of draw, see reference ranges below.
Pre-Cortisol Reference Range:
Cortisol (AM) = 6.02-18.4 ug/dL
Cortisol (PM) = 2.68-10.5 ug/dL


Biotin in specimens taken from patients on high-dose biotin therapy or supplements may intefere with at least one test in this panel and cause inaccurate test results. It is recommended that for patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (> 5 mg/day), no laboratory test specimen should be taken until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.
