Gestational Diabetes Screen [50 gram - ACOG]

Specimen:

Collect

  • One Gray Top (1HR)

Also Acceptable:
  • One SST (1HR)

Submit

  • One 4 mL (Min:1 mL) Whole blood in Gray Top. Submit Refrigerated.

Also Acceptable:
  • One 1 mL (Min:0.5 mL) Serum in SST. Submit Refrigerated.
  • One 1 mL (Min:0.5 mL) Plasma . Submit Refrigerated. Submit in a Standard Transport Tube.

Special Handling

  • Give 50 gm of glucola and wait 1 hour then draw specimen.
    Patient does not need to be fasting. However, once glucola is administered they should not have anything else to eat or drink (except water) until the 1 hour sample is drawn.

    Other alternative samples:
    Green Top (Li Hep), Lavender EDTA, Pink EDTA, Red Top.
    If using alternative serum or plasma separate from cells ASAP.
    Stability for serum or plasma: Ambient 8 hrs, RF 3 days, FZ 1 month.

Interpretive Data

General Reference Range : <135 mg/dL
One-hour glucose values >140 mg/dL identify approximately 79% of women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), while one-hour glucose values >130 mg/dL identify approximately 93% of women with GDM. Recommend patients above the cutoff undergo a 3-hr glucose tolerance test for confirmation.
