Specimen:
  Collect: Skin Scrapings  
  Submit: Skin Scrapings in Sterile Specimen Container. Submit Ambient.  
  Special Handling: With an ethanol (70%) gauze square, briskly clean the lesion to include the entire periphery. Sterile distilled water or sterile saline may be substituted for ethanol, especially if a yeast infection is suspected. If the lesion is inflamed or contains fissures, the lesion should be cleaned with gauze soaked in sterile, distilled water. With a sterile scalpel, scrape material from the periphery of the lesion.
If dried exudates are present, remove it with sterile forceps. Be sure to collect any moist exudates. Transport to laboratory in a clean glass or plastic collection container. The sterile urine container may be used.
