False negative results may occur when HCG levels are below the sensitivity level of the test (20 MIU/mL). When pregnancy is still suspected, retest in 48 hours. Ectopic pregnancy may produce very low levels of HCG, if suspected, further testing using a quantitative method may be desirable.
