PLEASE NOTE: Zinc protoporphyrin reference ranges are based on the OSHA standards for lead and zinc protoporphyrin surveillance programs. If the patient is under fifteen years old the reference range is <35 ug/dl. Zinc protoporphyrin is most useful in diagnosis of lead exposure and iron deficiency. Zinc protoporphyrin levels between 35 and 80 are of indeterminate significance when lead levels are not elevated and iron studies are normal.
