Phlebotomy Training Program

Phlebotomy is the collection of blood samples used for laboratory testing. Lab tests, ordered by physicians, are a key component to diagnosing and treatment of patients. Phlebotomists are in demand for positions in laboratories, hospitals, clinics and physician offices.

Interpath Laboratory is now taking applications for our fall phlebotomy class. Applications are available at 1100 Southgate, Pendleton, OR, or click here to download. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED/equivalent and write a 500 word essay. Personal interviews will be scheduled with final candidates. Students are also required to show proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or sign a declination form. Deadline for applications is March 21, 2008.

The course is offered in two parts: a 10 week (60 hour) class consisting of lecture that covers principles and practices of drawing blood, and student lab where basic skills will be learned on mannequin arm, fellow students and volunteers. Classes start April 18, 2008 and are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:30pm. Cost is $300 + Text and must be paid by April 5, 2008.

Students must receive a minimum C grade (74%) and successfully perform 5 phlebotomy procedures to proceed to clinical training and to obtain initial certification.

The second part of the course is the optional clinical training. Students will receive one-on-one guidance and coordinate morning clinical hours with the clinical instructor. Students have two clinical training options: 60 hours with 50 successful, unaided venipunctures, or 120 hours with 100 successful, unaided venipunctures, 25 capillary punctures and 5 observed arterial punctures (required for national ASCP certification). All clinical hours are volunteer and must be completed within 10 or 20 weeks respectively.
